Who Says Crochet Is Hard? Learn Double Crochet and Make Stunning Projects Easily

Meta Description:
Learn how to crochet the simple double crochet stitch with this beginner-friendly guide. Discover its uses, how to increase and decrease stitches, and easy project ideas like blankets, scarves, hats, and more.

 Crochet Made Simple

Who says crochet is hard? Once you master a few basic stitches, it becomes a relaxing and creative hobby. One of the most rewarding and versatile stitches you can learn is the double crochet stitch — often abbreviated as dc in patterns.

Whether you’re a beginner or looking to expand your skills, double crochet is your ticket to making cozy blankets, trendy sweaters, and even practical home accessories.

What Is a Double Crochet Stitch?

The double crochet stitch is taller than single or half-double crochet, creating a soft, open texture. It’s perfect for projects that need a little drape — like shawls, sweaters, and blankets.

How to Make a Double Crochet:

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch.

  2. Yarn over again and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook).

  3. Yarn over, pull through two loops.

  4. Yarn over once more, pull through the remaining two loops.

That’s it! With a bit of practice, this rhythm becomes second nature.

🪡 How to Shape with Double Crochet: Increases & Decreases

When you’re ready to go beyond flat rectangles, shaping is your next step!

How to Increase (dc inc):

Work two double crochet stitches into the same stitch to widen your project. Perfect for flared sleeves, hats, or circular pieces.

How to Decrease (dc2tog):

Work two stitches together to reduce width. This helps shape shoulders, necklines, or hat crowns.
