Half Double crochet in back loop only

Welcome to my blog!
Today, we’re learning about one of my favorite textured stitches — the Half Double Crochet in Back Loops Only, often written as HDC BLO. If you love crochet stitches that are simple yet add beautiful dimension to your projects, you’re going to enjoy this one!

🌸 What Is the Half Double Crochet in Back Loops Only?

The Half Double Crochet (HDC) is already a popular stitch because it’s quick, soft, and easy to learn.
But when you work it in the back loops only, it completely transforms — giving your fabric a ribbed texture that’s both flexible and visually striking.

Each stitch in crochet has two loops on top — a front loop (closer to you) and a back loop (further away).
Normally, you insert your hook under both loops, but in this technique, you’ll work only into the back loop, leaving the front loop unworked. That’s what creates those beautiful horizontal ridges that look like little rows of knitting!

✨ Why You’ll Love This Stitch

The HDC BLO stitch is perfect when you want texture without complicated patterns. It’s soft, stretchy, and gives a lovely ribbed look that makes your crochet pieces stand out.

Here are some great uses for this stitch:

  • 🧣 Scarves – adds texture and warmth

  • 🧢 Hats & Beanies – gives stretch and a neat ribbed brim

  • 🧥 Sweaters & Cardigans – perfect for cuffs, hems, or full garments

  • 🏡 Blankets & Pillows – adds cozy, modern texture

  • 👜 Bags & Totes – creates a sturdy yet flexible fabric

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, this stitch is relaxing and satisfying to make.

🪡 What You’ll Need

  • Any yarn of your choice (I’m using a medium weight yarn)

  • A matching crochet hook (check your yarn label for the recommended size)

  • Scissors and a yarn needle for finishing

🧵 Step-by-Step Pattern: HDC in Back Loops Only

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • blo = back loop only

1️⃣ Start with a foundation chain
Make a slip knot and chain any number of stitches. For practice, chain 12–20 stitches.

2️⃣ Row 1:
Yarn over, insert your hook into the 3rd chain from the hook, yarn over again, and pull up a loop (you’ll have 3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over once more and pull through all 3 loops.
Repeat this across the row. Chain 2 and turn your work.

3️⃣ Row 2:

Now we’ll start working in the back loops only.

Yarn over, insert your hook under the back loop only of the next stitch, yarn over again, and pull up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
Repeat across the row, chain 2, and turn.

4️⃣ Continue Rows:
Keep repeating Row 2 until your piece reaches the desired length.

You’ll start to see a lovely ribbed pattern forming — soft, stretchy, and full of texture!

💡 Tips for Success

  • Keep your tension even to maintain neat ridges.

  • Use a larger hook if you want a looser, drapier fabric.

  • Try alternating colors for a striped ribbed effect.

🧶 Final Thoughts

The Half Double Crochet in Back Loops Only is such a versatile and satisfying stitch.
It’s simple enough for beginners but gives your projects a professional, textured finish.

I love using this stitch for cozy wearables and textured home décor — and once you try it, I’m sure it’ll become one of your favorites too!
