If you’ve been looking for an easy crochet stitch for beginners, you’re in the right place! The crochet mesh stitch is one of the simplest and most versatile stitches to learn. It’s light, airy, and perfect for making summer tops, scarves, shawls, bags, and lightweight blankets. In this blog post, I’ll share a step-by-step written pattern for the crochet mesh stitch, along with links to my full YouTube tutorial so you can follow along visually.

🧶 Materials You’ll Need

To practice the crochet mesh stitch, gather the following:

  • Yarn: Light or medium weight cotton yarn works best for this airy stitch

  • Crochet Hook: Choose a size that matches your yarn (check yarn label for guidance)

  • Scissors

  • Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

✨ Crochet Mesh Stitch Written Pattern

Foundation Chain:
Chain an odd number of stitches + 3

Row 1:

  • Double crochet (DC) in the 6th chain from hook

  • Chain 1, skip a chain, DC in next chain – repeat to the end of the row

Row 2:

  • Chain 4

  • Skip the first DC, chain 1, DC in the next DC, chain 1, DC in the next DC – repeat to the end

Repeat Row 2 until your project reaches the desired length.

🌸 What is the Mesh Stitch Best For?

The crochet mesh stitch creates a light, breathable fabric with an openwork look. It’s perfect for:

  • Summer garments (lightweight tops, cover-ups, and vests)

  • Scarves and shawls (airy and drapey)

  • Market bags and totes (sturdy yet flexible)

  • Blankets and throws (especially with bulky yarn)

  • Home décor projects (like curtains or table runners)

Because it’s such a simple and repetitive stitch, it’s also great for beginners who want to build confidence and improve stitch consistency.

📌 Tips for Beginners

  • Use a cotton or bamboo yarn for garments and bags

  • Keep your tension loose for a softer, flowy look

  • Block your finished project to open up the mesh design
