How to crochet a granny square

Granny Square:

Welcome to my blog! Today, I’m sharing an easy granny square crochet pattern, perfect for beginners who want to learn how to crochet a granny square. This step-by-step crochet tutorial will guide you through every round using a 4mm crochet hook and cotton DK yarn.

This free crochet pattern is ideal for creating blankets, throws, cushions, scarves, or DIY crochet projects. You’ll learn important crochet techniques for beginners, including double crochet (dc), chain stitches, and slip stitch joins. Follow the pattern and the accompanying video tutorial for a clear demonstration.

Whether you are a beginner crocheter or an experienced crochet enthusiast, this granny square tutorial is easy to follow and fun to make. You can grow the square as big as you want, making it perfect for home decor or handmade gifts.

Pattern Instructions

Round 1:

  1. Chain 4.

  2. Make 3 double crochets (dc) into the 4th chain from the hook.

  3. Chain 2, 3 dc in the same space, chain 2 – repeat 2 more times. You should now have a set of 4 groups of 3 dc.

  4. Join with a slip stitch on top of the first chain 4.

Follow the video for a visual guide and better understanding of the pattern.

Round 2:

  1. Chain 2, turn your work.

  2. In the chain-2 corner space, make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).

  3. Skip the next set of 3 dc, then repeat (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next chain-2 corner space.

  4. Join with a slip stitch on top of the initial chain 2.

Round 3:

  1. Repeat Round 2.

  2. You will notice extra spaces in the middle of each side. Make 3 dc in each of these  spaces.

  3. In every corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).

Round 4:

  1. Work 3 dc in each space.

  2. In each corner space, make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).

Note:
You can make your granny square as large as you like! For larger squares, continue adding rounds: in the middle of each side, make 3 dc in each space, and in corners, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
