Step 2: The Separation (Joining Round)

When you reach your designated Yoke Row, follow this chart to divide your shells for the front, back, and sleeves.

Size Front (L) Skip (Sleeve) Back Skip (Sleeve) Front (R)
Newborn 2 Shells 4 Shells 5 Shells 4 Shells 2 Shells

Important: In the joining round, remember to Chain 6 when skipping the sleeve shells. This creates the underarm bridge. On the following row, you will work 2 new shells into this ch-6 space to expand the chest.

The Pattern Instructions

Foundation: Chain the count required for your size.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. Turn.

Row 2 (Mesh Base): Ch 3, sk 1 st, *V-st (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st, sk 2; repeat from * until 1 st remains, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3 (Small Shells): Ch 3, *5 dc in ch-2 sp, sc in space between V-sts; repeat from * across, dc in top of turning ch.

Row 4 (Increase Mesh): Ch 4 (dc + ch 1), *sc in 3rd dc of shell, ch 3, dc in sc, ch 3; repeat from * across, dc in turning ch.

Row 5 (Medium Shells): Ch 3, *6 dc in ch-3 space, sc in dc; repeat from * across, dc in turning ch.

Rows 6-7+: Continue repeating Mesh and Shell rows, increasing dc counts in shells as the yoke grows. Stop at the recommended Yoke Row in the chart above.

Body & Finish

Complete the separation using the chart above. Work Rows 9–13 (or until desired length) by repeating the Mesh and Shell rows. Fasten off and finish with a delicate picot border or ribbon tie.
