Free Crochet Pattern: One-Piece Top-Down Baby Cardigan

Welcome back to the blog! Today, I’m sharing a project that is close to my heart—a Textured Top-Down Baby Cardigan. If you've ever struggled with sewing crochet pieces together, you will love this "no-sew" construction.

Using King Cole Big Value Recycled Dishcloth Cotton, we are creating a piece that is as sustainable as it is soft. This yarn is a sturdy 8-ply / DK weight, making it perfect for a 3mm hook to achieve a professional, boutique-style finish. Let's dive into the pattern!

Materials

  • Yarn: 2 balls of King Cole Big Value Recycled Dishcloth Cotton (DK/8-ply)

  • Hook: 3mm

  • Size: 0-3 Months (Adjustable)

  • Extras: 2 Buttons, Stitch Markers, Yarn Needle


Pattern Instructions

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • Ch: Chain

  • HDC: Half Double Crochet

  • DC: Double Crochet

  • V-St: V-Stitch (HDC, Ch 1, HDC)

  • Sk: Skip

  • St: Stitch


The Yoke

Foundation: Ch 66.

Markers: Place markers in the 11th, 22nd, 44th, and 55th chains.

  • Row 1: Ch 2, HDC in 3rd ch from hook. HDC to marker. In marked ch, work V-St (HDC, Ch 1, HDC). Repeat across. HDC in remaining chains. Turn.

  • Rows 2-3: Ch 2, HDC in each st across. Work V-St into the Ch-1 space of previous V-St. Turn.

  • Row 4 (Mesh): Ch 3, DC in next st. Ch 1, sk 1, DC in next. Repeat across. Work V-St into V-St spaces. Turn.

  • Rows 5-7 (Solid): Ch 3, DC in each st across. Work V-St into V-St spaces. Turn.

  • Row 8: Repeat Row 4 (Mesh).

  • Row 9: DC in each st across. Work V-St into V-St spaces. Turn.


The Body

  • Row 10 (Join): DC to 1st V-St. DC into V-St. Skip shoulder stitches. Ch 3, DC into 2nd V-St. DC across back. DC into 3rd V-St. Skip shoulder stitches. Ch 3, DC into 4th V-St. DC in remaining sts. Turn.

  • Row 11: Ch 3, DC in each st (including the 3 underarm chains).

  • Rows 12-23: DC in each st across. Fasten off.


The Sleeves

  • Round 1: Join yarn at underarm. Ch 3, DC in same space. DC around armhole. Sl st to join.

  • Rounds 2-10: Ch 3, DC in each st around. Sl st to join. Fasten off.
