Modern Lemon Peel Crochet Placemat & Coaster Set: A Free Kitchen Crochet Pattern

Transform your dining room with handmade elegance!

If you are looking for a way to spruce up your home decor, there is nothing quite like a custom tableware set. Today, I’m sharing my favorite pattern for a textured crochet placemat and matching coaster. Using the beautiful Lemon Peel Stitch, these pieces are thick, durable, and provide the perfect table cover to protect your furniture from heat and spills.

This project is a must-have for your kitchen crochet collection. Whether you use a classic Cream cotton or a bold Denim Blue, these placemats add a professional, high-end feel to any table setting. This set isn't just a decorative cover; it’s a functional piece of art that makes every meal feel special.

Materials You’ll Need

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • Ch: Chain

  • Sc: Single Crochet

  • Dc: Double Crochet

  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet

  • St(s): Stitch(es)

  • Sl st: Slip Stitch

Special Technique: The Crab Stitch

The Crab Stitch (also known as the Reverse Single Crochet) is the "secret weapon" for tableware.

What is it? The Crab Stitch is worked in the opposite direction of regular crochet (left to right). This creates a corded, twisted edge that is very firm. It prevents your placemats from curling at the edges and adds a beautiful, rugged texture to your home decor projects.

The Lemon Peel Placemat Pattern

The Main Body Using Color A (Cream), Ch 60.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Dc in next st, sc in next st. Repeat from * to * across. Turn.

  • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as your first dc). Sc in the next dc. Dc in the next sc, sc in the next dc. Repeat from * to * across. Turn.

  • Rows 3–50: Repeat Row 2.

    • Note: To keep the "Lemon Peel" texture, always crochet a dc into a sc, and a sc into a dc. If your last stitch was a sc, start the next row with a Ch 2.

The Stylish Border Switch to Color B (Denim Blue) for a pop of color.

  1. Round 1: Ch 1. Sc evenly around all four sides. Work 3 sc in each corner to turn smoothly. Join with sl st.

  2. Round 2: Ch 2. Hdc in each stitch around. In the corners, work (1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc). Join with sl st.

  3. Round 3: Ch 1. Work the Crab Stitch (Reverse Single Crochet) in every stitch around the entire edge.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Styling Tips for Your Table

These placemats look incredible when paired with wooden chargers or white ceramic plates. Because they are made of cotton, they are easy to wash—just lay them flat to dry to keep that crisp, rectangular shape.
