Easy Waffle Stitch Baby Hat
A Simple Crochet Tutorial for Newborns & Infants
Looking for the perfect handmade baby shower gift? This crochet baby beanie combines a super-stretchy ribbed brim with the cozy texture of the Waffle Stitch. Using a rich forest green yarn and a fluffy white pom-pom, this hat is both modern and timeless.
Project Materials
- Yarn: Paintbox Simply DK (or any Worsted/DK weight acrylic)
- Hook Size: 4.0mm or 4.5mm
- Tools: Tapestry needle, Scissors, and a 3-inch White Pom-pom
The Crochet Pattern
1. The Foundation & Brim
Foundation: Chain enough to reach 34 cm (approx. 60 chains). Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
- Round 1: Chain 1. Single Crochet (SC) in the second chain from hook and each chain around. Join.
- Round 2: Chain 2 (counts as DC). *Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) in next 2 sts, Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. Join.
- Round 3: Chain 2. *BPDC in the FPDC stitches, FPDC in the BPDC stitches.* Repeat around. (This creates the broken rib effect).
2. The Waffle Stitch Body
- Round 4: Chain 2. *FPDC in next stitch, Double Crochet (DC) in next 2 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. Join.
- Rounds 5-Finish: Repeat Round 4 until the hat measures approximately 10-11 cm from the start (or 1.5 inches before your final desired length).
3. Decreasing & Finishing
- Decrease Round 1: Chain 2. *DC in next stitch, DC2tog.* Repeat around.
- Final Round: Chain 2. *DC2tog* in every stitch around.
- Closing: Fasten off with a long tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave through the top stitches, pull tight to close, and attach your white pom-pom securely!
Why This Is the Best Baby Hat Pattern
The 2-front/2-back post ribbing ensures the hat is extra stretchy, which is crucial for newborns. The waffle stitch provides a double layer of warmth without being too heavy. It's a quick win for any crocheter!
